Palmetto St.Augustine the IDEAL Turf Grass for Commercial and Residential Properties

Palmetto St. Augustine is a Turf Grass with a beautiful dark green color. It has excellent shade / drought tolerance, and cold hardiness. With its
"Soft To The Touch Feel" Palmetto is the IDEAL Turf Grass for home and commercial applications throughout the southern US.

Below is a list of Best Maintenance Practices Compiled by Sod Solutions. These BMPs are written as a guide and should be modified as local climate, soil and environmental conditions dictate. It is important to note that no “magic fertilizer” or “super chemical” will solve all problems or make any turfgrass perfect.

Commercial Development
"Palmetto St. Augustine gives us the flexibility to use it in full sun, or in some shade shade. But, it is Palmetto's good looks that make us able to use it anywhere."

"Palmetto St. Augustine is demonstrating the positive traits we expect from a St. Augustine, but with a high tolerance for cold and drought. It takes several frosts to brown out, which means it's staying green much longer than other St. Augustines."

Landscaping blitz readies Beaufort's Spanish Moss Trail for grand opening - Beaufort News - IslandPacket.com

With the weather getting colder we have been getting the question," Can I still install sod this time of year?" and the answer is "YES!"( unless the ground is frozen). Our friends over at The Greenery have been installing sod provided by Nimmer Turf Farm for the Spanish Moss Trail in Beaufort , SC. Dormant installation is a standard practice. Ample water is still required for rooting and "green-up" should occur in the following spring.  In South Carolina we grow "warm season" varieties that do go dormant after a few heavy frosts and then will "green-up" in the spring.  Click on the link below to read the whole article about the new Spanish Moss Trail in the Island Packet and see a picture of our beautiful sod in action!

Dormant Turf Care

It is easy to understand why dormant turf is neglected.  It appears to be "dead" and therefore needs no attention.  While the amount of care is reduced during dormancy, it still requires some attention to survive and thrive once dormancy is broken.

The winters in our area are very unpredictable.  You have cold, raw weather one day and balmy warm breezes the next.  This causes the grass to vacillate between full dormancy and "waking up".

The main thing to remember is, the more the roots dry out the more desiccation and root loss you will suffer.  THIS IS ESPECIALLY TRUE OF NEWLY INSTALLED SOD.  It is therefore very important to monitor the soil for dryness and irrigate to keep the soil moist throughout the winter months.

Weed control may also be necessary.  For established grass, a pre-emergent may be the best answer.  For new sod, a post emergent is likely the best course of action.

If you have questions regarding the care of your lawn, you may want to rely on a landscape professional.. He or she will have the answers to insure your grass is green and healthy in the spring.
